    English Language Arts

ReadingReading is taught in many different ways: guided reading with novels, whole-class reading, small group reading to target specific skills, teacher and student read-alouds, etc…

My favorite part of teaching reading is introducing students to wonderful novels. I hope they enjoy the books I have selected this year!

Spelling: We will have a new spelling list every Monday. Spelling tests will be given on Fridays. The spelling lists should be stored in a clear pocket in your child’s binder. You can expect to have spelling homework a couple nights a week.

Grammar: Our grammar lessons include such topics as: nouns, verbs, subject, predicate, capitalization, fragments, end marks, pronouns, possessives, regular and irregular plurals, double negatives, contractions, homophones, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, etc...

We have a grammar workbook, we do formal lessons together in class, and we do daily oral language(editing skills).

Writing: We will have various writing projects throughout the year, including journal writing. Projects include each type of writing: persuasive, narrative, and informational.
