First Strokes created byJan McCleskey, MA, OTR

  • UPK uses First Strokes Multi-sensory Print Program to focus on pre-writing skills that will prepare our students for successful handwriting instruction.

Fine motor skills continue to develop physically through age 5 for pre-writing skills, so for this reason there needs to be an empahsis on teaching our 3 and 4 year old children pre-handwriting through a multi-sensory basis.

Children will expereince pre-writing activities throughout the fall that include but are not limited to finger painting, working in shaving cream, tracing activities and gross motor preparation.  In January children will begin the focus on the individual strokes, then progress to capital letter formation, and then lower case letter formation.
